Advice for Divorcés Helping Those Going Through a Divorce
Many of us who’ve been through a divorce find ourselves in a position where we’re asked, or wanting, to give advice to a friend who’s going through the same thing.
According to the article “8 Ways Divorcés Can Help Those Going Through Divorce Now” on www.huffingtonpost.com, there are a few things we should (and shouldn’t) pass along.
1. The article cautions us to not give advice unless it’s asked for, as it might be taken as judgment or criticism.
2. When we do give advice, it should be regarding relevant situations; situations we’ve actually gone through.
3. Ask if she’d like some divorce resources such as books, courses, or groups.
4. Be good to her. Be nurturing and supportive.
5. Remember the holidays. Often times a woman spends holidays alone after a divorce and not having the kids around for Mom’s day or Christmas can be devastating.
6. Encourage her to talk about it and vent. Keeping things inside are never a good idea.
7. Remind her of how important eating properly is, especially at such a stressful time in her life. There are plenty of healthy supplements available to help with stress and its related issues.
8. Pass along wisdom others gave us. Sometimes just knowing that others have been down the same road and survived can be really helpful.
As ones who’ve already been through it we can sometimes offer terrific advice, but it’s important that we don’t offer unwanted advice. It’s also that we offer relevant advice regarding things we’ve actually experienced, that we do our best to be supportive and try to keep our friend healthy, and that we let her know that she’s not alone.
