Is It Time To File For A Divorce?
Making the decision to end a marriage is not an easy one. And oftentimes, the time period leading up to that decision is as stressful (if not more so), than the actual leaving. I know that when I came to a crossroads in my marriage, the decision kind of made itself.
I woke up one day and realized that it would hurt more to stay than to leave, so I left. I know that for others it’s not that easy, so here are a list of signs that it might be time to start thinking about an exit strategy, compliments of the Huffington Post (“Divorce Advice: 5 Signs It’s Time To Move On”).
1. It hurts more than it doesn’t.
All relationships have their ups and downs, but if the downs seriously outweigh the ups then it might be time to give divorce some thought. I know I just thought about continuing to be miserable for the next 50 years of my life, and the decision was much easier.
2. What you once loved is now annoying.
Opposites attract initially and this can create some serious chemistry. But over time, what was first attractive can create problems. If solving those problems requires that either of you become a different person, a divorce might be a more sensible (and realistic) solution.
3. You’d rather be somewhere else.
In the early stages of a relationship, it’s not uncommon to want to spend as much time together as possible. But if, after the initial heat dies down, you find yourself avoiding time together, that’s a warning sign that the relationship may have run its course.
4. The fights are about the same things over and over and over again.
If the relationship hasn’t progressed to a point where issues are being solved, then that should send up a red flag or two.
5. You start to wonder what it would be like to be with that good looking guy who lives down the hall.
This seems pretty obvious. That’s not to say that just because we find another man attractive we should call a divorce lawyer, but at some point if it goes from simply noticing how nice looking someone else is to wanting to be with him/her, then it probably is time to make that call.
