Understanding Michigan Child Support
Child support is awarded in divorce, paternity and custody cases. Child(ren) have a right to be supported by their natural parents. Child support means payment of money to purchase the necessities of life such as food, shelter, and clothing. Child support also includes payment of medical, dental, and other health care expenses; childcare expenses; and educational expenses.
The amount of support is determined by the Michigan Child Support Formula. The Michigan Child Support Formula takes into account the following factors: number of children being supported, each parent’s net income, number of overnights that the child(ren) have with each party. The formula also provides for the division of health care costs and childcare expenses.
Child support is collected and disbursed through the Friend of the Court unless the parties opt out of Friend of the Court Services.
Child support is always modifiable upon a change in circumstances.
