Michigan Paternity Proceedings
The Paternity Act was established in Michigan to ensure that children born out of wedlock were supported. If the biological father is not on the child’s birth certificate or he will not sign an affidavit of parentage then it may be necessary to file an action for paternity. Once paternity is established the Court will be able to adjudicate the issues of Custody, Parenting Time and Child Support. The mother may also recover a proportion of uninsured medical expenses included in the birthing of the child. Since the Court may only order support retroactive to the date the paternity complaint is filed it is important to file the action as soon as possible once the child is born.
