Tips for Finding the Right Career
Finding the right career is no easy task, but you should know that it is an achievable goal. Even if you are starting later in life. There was a time when a middle aged individual who worried about being back on the market was exclusively referring to their love life. However, we now live in a time where many people have found themselves in need of new career ideas later in life instead. In many cases we see men and women finding the right career at age 50 or even older.
Finding The Right Career
Regardless of the timing, when we find ourselves on the hunt to find a new career, it can be very unsettling. Whether young or older, most think the need to find a new career is something other’s need to worry about. So, what do you do when you find yourself back on the market and searching for employment far later in life than you would have ever imagined? Stick to the basics and use your common sense.
Evaluate
Evaluate who you are. Start by identifying what makes you happy. You want to find a career path that will bring joy and personal satisfaction. Eliminate the stress of the unknown by focusing your energy on something that is a good personal fit. Career counselors can assist you in finding the right fit for you by evaluating both your skills and personality traits. They may even start by assessing your childhood dreams to identify things that you might “love” to do.
Try it on For Size
In order to find a career that works for you, try it on for size first. Make a short list of things you’ve always wanted to try and then look for volunteer arrangements where you can get on the spot experience to evaluate whether it is a good fit for you. Once you’ve identified something you like and decide you want to pursue it as a career path look into internships in the field or try job boards available through your local college.
Regardless of your current situation, having to find a new career can be as stressful as going through a divorce and finding yourself back in the dating arena again later in life. Once you’ve taken some time to get past the shock of your new situation, give yourself every edge you can. Start by evaluating what you have that can be used in a new arena. Make sure to review your training, education and experience to identify which if any can help you achieve your goals. Then go out and give it all you’ve got!
